The Question of Balance: Hand-built Leonard Style Reel Seats and Split-cane Bamboo Fly Rods began over 25 years ago as I walked into Ed Hartzell’s home to have him re-build ferrules on my bamboo fly rod. Instead, I ended up with a friend and mentor who guided me in making my own split-cane bamboo fly rod including my own ferrules and reel seat. I worked with Ed for 2 years. After that, I started to repair and do custom construction for friends and via word of mouth, I was kept busy building rods.
For awhile, life, a 1920 Tudor style home in need of love, and work got in the way and I put my avocation down. Now that I am retired from the US Forest Service, I am back in the shop and building.
